Continuing a Legacy through the Power of Sport

Meet Carmine

We honor the memory of Carmine, a passionate 16-year-old basketball player whose life was tragically cut short by fentanyl poisoning. At his funeral, the profound impact he had on his community became beautifully clear: teammates, friends, and loved ones brought basketballs to honor his love for the game, resulting in more than 200 donations.

Seeking to turn their immense grief into a catalyst for positive change, Carmine’s family partnered with Gear for Greatness to distribute these basketballs to underserved youth, ensuring his spirit and passion live on through the game he loved.

Making an Impact: Dickinson Select Gators

Through this vital collaboration, we had the privilege of delivering these meaningful donations to the Dickinson Select Gators, a Texas-based basketball program dedicated to serving low-income families.

This initiative was about more than just handing out athletic gear—it was an opportunity to mentor, educate, and protect the next generation. Before distributing the basketballs, we spoke directly with the young athletes about:

The dangers of fentanyl and illicit drugs
Strategies for navigating negative peer pressure
The importance of making informed, healthy choices

Access to the Game

For many of the children in the program, this was the very first basketball they had ever owned. By removing the financial barrier to equipment, this project gave these athletes the tools to participate fully in the sport, fostering teamwork, resilience, and community.

Through education and accessibility, we are keeping Carmine’s legacy alive on the courts where it belongs—one basketball, and one life, at a time.

KRISTOFF TEQUILLO

Kristoff is an aspiring professional volleyball player in the Philippines. Currently in senior high school (11th grade), Kristoff serves as the team captain of his school team. He hopes to inspire people to work hard and be a good leader through action.

AUMA MBECHE-ODHIAMBO

Auma is a current Division 1 outside hitter for Lafayette College. She is studying psychology and is entering her junior year. She hopes to inspire others through her strength in the midst of adversity. She believes hard work beats talent.
